In Tom Santopietro book Considering Doris Day he makes thoughtful observations on the song Christmas Story featured in On Moonlight Bay.

He writes: "In the second half of the film there is a lovely moment which naturally occurs when Doris Day sings. As Doris sings "Christmas Story", outside in the snow to Wesley's choir , Gordon MacRae joins in , and as the parents George and Alice watch from the snow-covered living room windows, one of the reasons why the film became so popular becomes clear. The Winfields are the idealized family everyone wants but in reality never existed, just as Doris represented the daughter /sister/girlfriend of whom everyone always dreamed. For once in a Warner Bros. musical, script, art direction, acting and song all blend into one cohesive whole, and the resulting number lingers in the memory long after the film has ended".
