The Doris Day Companion -A Beautiful Day- by Pierre Patrick and Garry McGee

Unread post by Johnny »

Just received The Doris Day Companion( published 2009) which is delightful journey and complete guide to the Doris Day Show and Doris' television specials.

I am surprised to see it gives all the movie premiere dates, complete film list and a full album discography of The Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winners.

There is a synopsis on each of the 128 television episodes from 1968-1973.

I have just started reading this well researched book which is filled with many commentaries from her colleagues and co-stars.

There is a wonderful heartfelt forward by Doris' friend and co-stars Jackie Joseph.

Hi Johnny,

A great book and a labor of love from the writers. I have my copy for years and I really enjoy it. So much details and details of the episodes and co-stars and guest stars. I have a few scripts of The Doris Day Show too. And a few of the original Doris Day Show stills... Doris and her team did an outstanding job with these series.. exept some of the stories... The book is a great start for collection anything Doris Day... and you got to have the Show on dvd...

Greetings,

P

While I was reviewing The Doris Day Companion to see if there is any mention of Stone Pine Estate , ( could not find), I reread some of the stories about Doris' guests on her show.

The story about Doris and Angie Dickinson going to lunch is a real howler that I thought I would share it here.

"Doris invited Angie Dickinson for lunch at Quail Lodge to discuss her pet foundation. They have a wonderful lunch, and when the check comes, Doris discovers she has forgotten her wallet - and Angie did not bring hers, so they can't pay. Doris calls for the manager, Ed Harbor. "By the way" she says, "I'm Doris Day".And this is my friend Angie Dickinson". "Oh sure" Ed replies, "I'm Cary Grant". Elmer take these desserts away. " "Ladies we don't go for that Hollywood stuff up here. It doesn't make any difference here in Carmel." He refuses to make arrangements with the ladies and calls the sheriff. After waiting all day, the sheriff finally arrives. When he sees Doris Day, he is shocked and surprised and breaks into a rendition of Doris' classic , " Secert Love".

A similar situation happened to my friend in the early 1980's. He was acting as a weekend manager in an an Ottawa hotel. A woman and her three children were having lunch when she asked that the bill be put on her husband's account. The server thought it was a scam and escorted them to the manager's office. The manager called thf police.

The woman asked to use the phone. In 5 minutes two Royal Canadian Mounted Police showed up much to the surprise of my friend.
The woman was Margaret Trudeau , wife of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. The children were Justin, Sasha & Michel , Trudeau. Of course today Justin Trudeau is our Prime Minister.

I wonder if he remembers this story.

My friend's supervisor ( a great guy, really enjoyed telling this story over thr years.
