1975 Merv Griffin

Unread post by Peter Flapper »

Hi all,

Came today across this Merv Griffin show. I think it's from 1975/76 it's after her release of her own biography.

This is a wonderful interview - one of her best. She has never seemed more comfortable with a host, and this interview, I believe, comes closest to displaying the natural, charming Doris Day. She and Merv had wonderful chemistry together!
Like Irene Dunne done.

Peter, thank you for posting. It is indeed a great interview. Doris looked fantastic. Peter, there is another interview, which I also believe was on a Merv Griffin show, where Doris appeared and also did Roger Miller. I saw the interview when it aired, but have not since. During the interview Roger Miller was so overwhelmed meeting Miss Day, that he just gushed on and on about it. With your great luck in finding all these televsion and radio gems, make on note on this particular TV show. Happy Days, Texas Gonzalo

Hi Texas,

There must be three Merv Griffin Doris Day appearances. The other two are not yet found online.

I believe the 1970 Griffin interview was the first televised interview appearance she ever made. I'd love to see it again, but I have a feeling it's no longer attainable. I hope I'm wrong. Same goes for the Phil Donahue interview she did in conjunction with her book. Never saw it, and I doubt if it is still in existence.
Like Irene Dunne done.

Oh Howard, I'd love to see the Phil Donaghue interview.

Also, always wondered why DD never did Dick Cavet- I really like his interviews.

James, I agree about Dick Cavett. A very bright, charming host. Somewhere along the line I heard that Doris was a Cavett fan. It would have been nice to see.

It is a shame she never appeared on the Cavett show. He would have most likely given her a full hour because he liked to dig deeper than most television talk show hosts. But I like this interview with Merv a lot. I also remember the 1970 interview with Merv, but I’ve never seen it anywhere since.

Yes Dick loved the big stars and was respectful and in awe of them many times while being a big flirt.

He did lovely interviews with Ginger Rogers, June Allyson, Katharine Hepburn, several with Bette Davis where I've never seen her so girly and flirty etc. Recently a rare one with Veronica Lake has been posted on Youtube.

I met Cavett a few years ago at a cocktail party in NYC. Pleasant man but always "on" and cracking wise. He deflected every attempt I made at serious conversation with a joke or a quip. Finally, I gave-up and just let him roll with the one-liners.

That would have been interesting Michael. He does seem to deflect with jokes a lot [on his show]. He was a frustrated/ unsuccessful actor, wasn't he?

James, I believe so. He had cameo roles in a few films along with a small part in Beetlejuice. He was friendly but he had a wall up. I couldn't tell what was going on behind the glib facade.
